Some places capture your heart the first time you visit. Bethany Beach has been doing just that for more than a century.
Known affectionately as "The Quiet Resort," Bethany Beach was founded in 1901 by members of the Christian Missionary Society, who envisioned a peaceful seaside community centered on faith, family, and fellowship. They named the town after the Biblical village of Bethany, a place associated with hospitality and friendship. The original tabernacle became the heart of the community and helped shape the welcoming character that still defines Bethany today.
Getting to Bethany Beach wasn't always easy. Before modern highways, visitors often traveled by train to nearby towns and completed their journey by wagon or boat. The opening of the Loop Canal in 1910 improved access and connected the inland bays, helping Bethany grow while preserving the peaceful atmosphere that continues to distinguish it from other beach communities.
Like many coastal towns, Bethany has faced tremendous challenges. The Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962 devastated much of Delaware's coastline, destroying homes, businesses, and large sections of the boardwalk. Rather than giving up, the residents rebuilt with determination and resilience. Their efforts preserved the charm and close-knit spirit that continue to attract generations of families.
Today, Bethany Beach continues to celebrate traditions that bring people together. Each Labor Day weekend, residents and visitors gather for the beloved End of Summer Funeral, a lighthearted farewell to another memorable beach season. It's a uniquely Bethany tradition that reminds everyone that while summer may end, the memories remain.
Bethany also embraces the spirit of community throughout the year. Each January, the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the popular Fire & Ice Festival, transforming the Quiet Resort into a vibrant winter destination. The festival features spectacular ice sculptures, family activities, live entertainment, and local businesses while raising funds to support volunteer and charitable organizations throughout the area.
